Buffy and Angel burst on to TV like some sort of modern Rome and Juliet. He was a vampire and she the vampire slayer. What made him different was that he had a soul and in a way understood her the way that few others could. He wasn’t afraid to tell her when she was being a fool, and could always be by her side. Unlike her friends, she didn’t need to worry about him in battle. Their relationship between seasons 2 and 3 is beautiful, complex and heartbreakingly sad.

Angelus

He changed, and used everything that he knew against her. Angel was still in there but Angelus has no soul, no reason to care. Now instead of fighting with him Buffy had to fight against him. Her pain was his pleasure.

Buffy

A part of her always loved him, even as he killed people that she knew and tried to make her life misery. As the slayer, her actions began to revolve around the trouble he caused and everything becomes about him. In a way it always was.

Angel’s soul is restored just as Buffy has opened a portal to send Angelus to hell. With no memory of anything that has happened, he is stabbed by the woman he loves and sent to hell in order to seal the portal and protect the world.

Buffy struggles with her new life without Angel and the ramifications of what she did.

Angel returns to earth after enduring years of torture, unable to understand all that has happened and yet still loving Buffy. He is tormented by the First Evil that tries to make him take his own life but Buffy stops him and tires to help him get better.

Buffy has to deal with Angel’s decision to leave her for her ‘own good’ as he puts it and the Mayor’s attempt to transform himself into a demon and take over Sunnydale. With her high-school years over, Buffy has to look at a whole new set of life challenges and she has to do it without Angel.

He leaves her behind, convinced he causes her more harm than good and devastated that he is giving her up. However he remains convinced it is the right thing to do and their relationship comes to an end, though their love remains strong.
