Inara works as a 'companion', similar to a prostitute but with high status and respect within the 'verse. Mal is the captain of the shuttle Serentiy and Inara works from there, which gives her certain levels of freedom she would not have working ona planet and in turnit presents more business opertunities for Mal. They are both highly protective of each other despite their bickering. The two often bicker and Mal struggles with Inara's occupation while showing that he has deeper feelings for her. Inara returns his feelings but neither will admit to them, leaving them in a tate of sexual frustration and longing.
